Knowing God's Will For Your Life
Foreward "One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock."

- Psalms 27:4-5, KJV

Knowing the Will of God is a process and a posture. It's a process because we are ever seeking to know God's will, and God is ever revealing His will. It's a posture, because we need to be in a posture of prayer and receiving and constantly have an attitude of obedience. As we embark upon this process, we will know God's will for our lives more and more each day.

Principles to Help Prepare You Here are a few principles I've found useful in my own life in finding God's will for any given situation!

  • "Not my will, but You will be done." That was essentially the heartbeat of Jesus's prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, in Luke 22:42. Jesus was at the point of extreme stress and trepidation in anticipation of His own death that was not too far from then. Jesus could have called it quits and not face the Cross, and God would have received Him home again, but Jesus laid down his entire will. So the first thing about knowing and actually having God's will become a reality in your life is to lay down your will and invite God's will to be done.

Matthew 6:10 says, "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as [it is] in heaven." You see, Heaven's got it all together. Down here is a mess. We're basically praying here God's priorities for God's glory, that just as it is heaven, let it be on earth in your situation.

  • "Delight yourself in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart." That's in Psalms 37:4. What happens is this: when you delight yourself in God, abide in His presence, sing songs of adoration and love to Him, be intimate with Him, say sweet nothings into His ear, and lay down your will - what happens is that your desires begin to align with God's desires.

Suddenly, you are wanting the things that He wants! You love the things that He loves! You're burned with the things God longs to see happen. What's happened? God has implanted those desires within your heart in the surgical process of you laying your heart out before the Lord and being honest and intimate with Him. So intimacy helps you to know God's heart, and as a result, your heart reflects those desires He Himself wants for you.

The following verses should come in handy. They are Psalms 37.

3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; [so] shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.
4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring [it] to pass.
6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.
7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.
  • "The wisdom that is from above is... peaceable." That's in James 3:17. Let's look at it. "But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, [and] easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy."

Satan cannot imitate God's peace, because Jesus Himself is the Prince of Peace! He is Peace Himself! "The Kingdom of God is.. righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." Romans 14:17. So one thing you will know if something is God's will is God's unique peace as you are prayerfully considering a matter.

  • God will not have you do something that will have you contradict the Word of God. Psalm 138:2 says, "I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name." Isn't that something? He's magnified His Word above His name!
  • Last, but not least, "Obedience is better than sacrificice." Consider this verse: 1 Samuel 15:22. "And Samuel said, Hath the LORD [as great] delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey [is] better than sacrifice, [and] to hearken than the fat of rams."

We must never justify our actions with what we perceive as what the results will be. "Look, Lord! See how many people I might be able to win to Christ if I go this way - and I AM going this way for sure!" Well, the ends never justify the means in God's eyes. Many preachers have burned themselves out building certain ministries over years, and when they finally complain to God over their sacrifices, God replied to them by simply saying, "I never called you to do that in the first place."

  • Conclusion The aforemtioned steps will allow to prepare your heart to be at a place where you can receive revelation of God's will in your life. We cannot know God's will for our lives if we are Sunay Christians, so our walk in Christ has to be a reality from Monday through Saturday!

There is indeed a school of thought that goes like this: God does not have a specific will for you. Just follow the Bible. People often wait around wondering what God's will for them is for the future, and so they don't do anything. While the explanation here is true, it is only 50% of the perspective; to only live by this aspect is to abandon the fact that we need a progressive relelation, else our hopes in Christ will perish. Proverbs 29:18a says, "Where [there is] no vision, the people perish...." In another translation, it reveals, "Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint."

The solution is simple and two-fold: God has a long term call upon your life, brother and sister in the Lord, and as you and He together discover what your gifts and talents that He's placed in your life, and as the Holy Spirit continually teaches you how they will contribute towards that calling, be constantly doing the daily challenges and commandments in the Word of God in the present.

If you'd like, join me in prayer.

"Lord, I pray for the people who are reading this section and are seeking Your will in their lives, and are now praying in agreement with me as they read this prayer. Dear sweet Lord, cause them to know Your will in the days to come, but draw them into an incredible intimacy with You, because only in Your presence can the fulness of joy be found. Lord, if there is anything in their lives that is hindering them from hearing, seeing and knowing You, cause it to be removed. Bless them abundantly and keep their eyes upon You, and bring them to the place where they can enter into Your victory, in Jesus' mighty Name. Amen!"
