  Acting at Work
Foreward Here are some common sense tips to follow with respect to how to act as a Christian in a secular work place. Our presumptiousness and foolishness will get us fired, and will even cause people to ridicule Christ. We must be more contemporary-minded and open to adapting around the corporate environment in order to acheive better soul-winning results!

Do's and Don'ts
  • Concentrate on Friendship Evangelism - There is a saying, "People don't care how much you know. They want to know how much you care." A friendship is the most intimate and comfortable way for you to show Christ's love to a person through your friendship. Sometimes preaching is not necessarily they key to their hearts. It may be overlooked things like listening and being their when a person is hurting. Most non-Christians are antagonistic to preachy Christians but are warm and will open up to a person who is a real and true friend.

The fundamentalist approach of preaching (and if you don't accept the preaching you're going to hell) does not work and will get you fired and will get people to ridicule Christ and Christians because of your behavior.

  • Don't backbite anyone - If people know you as a Christian and then catch you trying to manipulate things behind the scenes or even speaking unfavorably, you will end up embarassed or even humiliated. Don't do it!
  • Avoid being showy - Some people decorate their cubicles with Bibles, posters, cards, and all kinds of Christian merchandise, scripture, etc. There is a point where you're actually overdoing it. A life is a witness, not merchandise. It's okay to have a small hint so that fellow Christians can identify you as a Christian. But be careful, because not all who call themselves Christians - who study theology and go to church - will have Christ-like character. One of my worse backstabbers was a fellow Christian trying to get ahead of me!
  • Don't preach at work - The Word says to honor your earthly masters, employers. You're being paid to work, not paid to stand in halls or in your office and outright preach the Gospel. You'll create discomfort around you and you will increase people's resistance of you. Jesus admonished His disciples to be as wise as serpents but as gentle as doves. Instead, be a refreshment and encouragement to people's hearts. Let them see a difference in you - a difference not arrived at by all those "self-help" Les Brown or Anthony Robbins seminars, but by a changed life by the hand and heart of Jesus Christ!
  • Long Distance Calls - Fellowship over the phone is fun. One Christian woman lost her job because she was racking up a huge long distance bill. The office phone system had a tracking system that counted minutes per phone extension.

Some companies, however, have an internal phone network where you can call from the Los Angeles office, for example, to the New York office without incurring any long distance charges. The phone conversation is digital information that is routed through the already-existing data network.

  • Don't be slothful - Christians, traditionally, were praised for their hard work and excellence of quality. They can mock you for being a Christian, but they can't mock your commitment to job excellence!
  • Beware Big Brother - Don't anger anyone. Your activities on the computer and the computer network could very well be monitored by someone who does not like you. Be careful giving out your work e-mail address too!
