HIGHLANDER Sword Report: Clan MacLeod Sword
The construction is of 420 stainless, "carefully tempered and hand polished". There is some good Celtic-style detailing on the handle, and it features the "MacLeod" clan name insignia. The guard is plated in pure silver. Is it identical to the one in the movie? Not quite. Again, like the Sword of Connor movie katana is only about 70-80% close to the absolute original, but good enough, unless you want to contact Jose de Braga and commission him with thousands of dollars to hand-carve an original for you! (He reworked the Connor katana for Highlander III, and he also made the handle for the "Sword of Duncan" which Adrian Paul rejected for use of the TV series!) The differences appear mostly on the guard, which is shorter on this replica, versus the one in the movie. The movie sword has a more rustic look and feel to it, and possibly a longer handle. But it's nice. However, for the money - $295 through the Noble Collection 1-800-8NOBLE8, and through Highlander Official 1-800-344-0951. The handle is wire-wrapped, as you can see in the photo. The leather is actually a suede, so make sure your hands are clean and dry when holding it! It's heavy but not super-duper heavy. Above all, it was very beautiful and I felt a sense of power, a little more so than the Braveheart sword! (Sorry, fans of Sir William Wallace!) The best price I've found for this sword is $265. Because of the use of stainless steel, you really don't want to go against someone with a superior sword. See the sections below this for a Metallurgical Analysis, but basically, stainless steel's grains have weak bondings and is therefore vulnerable such that a well-made sword can cut through this.
