WHAT'S NEW

This section of the HSG (The HIGHLANDER Sword Shopper's Guide) covers some of the exclusive projects and arrangements we've managed to coordinate for our fellow Highlander fans. Again, we are not a store nor a business. We don't sell anything nor do we make any money. So please do not write us for catalogs; we don't print any! This is our labor of love to you.

Sword Forum Magazine Online

December 17, 1998 - We have officially launched our latest project, Sword Forum Magazine Online. SFMO is a bi-monthly free publication - another labor of love, dedicated to the collecting, forging, and martial arts use of bladed weapons of various cultures and time periods. Please note that this is not a Highlander site, nor is it a daughter or sister site to the HSG. However, there's nothing keeping Highlander fans from learning more about real swords beyond a Highlander context. SFMO is also equipped with a discussion forum.

A Battleworthy Sword of Duncan

October 27, 1998 - We've been contacted by Sal D'Aquila, who is the artist of the First Season Prop sword. He is interested in releasing an original version of this sword (with enough variance to satisfy copyright laws, but the variances won't be noticed by most fans). The HSG is working in conjunction with Mr. D'Aquila to make this sword affordable. We are very roughly estimating that the sword will be in the US$600 range and will feature a blade that can take a beating and still perform.

Slight customizations will be available, if you want to have a high-performing forged blade by, say, Randal Graham. Some are asking us about D2 steel blades. Randal has been able to get L6 and advanced heat-treating to outperform D2. We are researching ways to make Japanese style blades with good aesthetics and make these custom blades affordable to HSG readers.

There will be a limited edition of about 10 to start with. The blade will be made by Kris Cutlery which is a good "beater" sword. Click here for Sword Forum Magazine's review of the blade. This blade was selected because it reduces costs for the fan who can't afford thousands of dollars, and the blade can withstand some stress should the blade be put to some degree of use. It will be advertised as a "decorative" sword for legal reasons, and will not be guaranteed for stage-combat reenactment purposes.

The blade which the Sal D'Aquila sword will sport will be a lighter version of the 29" Kris Cutlery blade with a 7" tang. The handle is made of a kevlar composite which seems to be hard to break. Click HERE for my report of an evaluation sword.
